Building a health education initiative

College of L&S, Public Health

Nilufar Kayhani is a Public Health major, a transfer student, and the daughter of Afghan refugees. From a young age, Nilufar helped her parents navigate U.S. healthcare systems. As a result, she developed a commitment to health equity and conducting public health research that supports marginalized communities. Nilufar has organized two research projects: one exploring Afghan refugee women’s health needs, and the other investigating COVID-19’s impacts on marginalized student’s educational performance and health. During the pandemic, Nilufar and her sister founded Afghan Clinic — a health education initiative by and for Afghans. Nilufar is grateful for all of the support of campus communities since transferring to UC Berkeley.
