The EECS program institutionalized equitable homework and study group formation practices as well as a “How to be a Researcher” course enforcing peer-led tiered mentorship between graduate and undergraduate students, which continues to be taught today. EECS performed a comprehensive data assessment of the outcomes of the Discovery funding. All of the following survey results improved: interest in Discovery activities, priority to engage, awareness of Discovery activity opportunities, feeling valued as an individual on campus, and feeling that one belongs at UC Berkeley.
- Reach: 531 students, with yearly impact to 112 new students each year through the “How to be a Researcher” course.
- Technological advancements towards equity through an AI tool that automates the formation of study groups that promote community and avoid “singletons.”
- Data collection and assessment of learning and belonging outcomes that will further inform future initiatives from a Discovery lens.
