Discovery Hubs with the Molecular Foundry

The Discovery Hubs for both Research and Internships at the Molecular Foundry is a partnership between UC Berkeley and the Molecular Foundry, a Department of Energy-funded nanoscience science research facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). It offers undergraduate students research and internship opportunities led by program directors, staff-scientists, faculty, and operations staff at the Molecular Foundry in the areas of nanoscience research, science administration, and the intersection of science and communication. These include:

  • Translation of complex scientific discoveries into engaging stories, producing written and visual content from complex scientific ideas and interviews to support science outreach, public engagement and communication efforts

  • Contributions to cutting-edge research in several areas of nanoscience, including quantum materials, data science, materials science, and synthetic biology. Students will gain experience with real lab tools, from cell culture to advanced imaging

  • Tracking trends in the Foundry's user community, identifying career trajectories and economic impacts to support the growth of the Foundry's User Program
  • Coding dashboards that support grant management and data analysis to support research at the Foundry

General Program Structure

  • Application Timeline: Hub applications for staff and faculty to host positions open in spring and close in early summer, with decisions by July. Applications for undergraduates to participate open in mid-July, with decisions in September

  • Year-Long Activities: Throughout the program, students work closely with Molecular Foundry staff to perform research, science communication, or administration work

  • Research Symposium: The program culminates in an invitation to present work in a showcase
