Research Beyond the Silos: Discovery Symposium Showcases a Year of Interdisciplinary Ideas

On May 8, 2026, Undergraduate Scholars and Graduate Fellows from 58 unique departments convened to showcase their research at the Discovery Hubs Symposium. The event served as the conclusion to the 2025-26 Discovery Hubs, an initiative designed to connect undergraduates with mentored research opportunities. For each of the 37 projects on display, students had the option to share their findings as an oral, table top, or poster presentation.

Early Access to High-Impact Research

For Smriti Rajan, a poster presentation was the ideal medium. Smriti is a first-year student studying bioengineering and business through Berkeley’s Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology program. Her research, conducted in partnership with the Molecular Foundry hub, explored how bio-based materials might be programmed to achieve self-healing. Similarly to how cuts heal themselves, biomaterials might be engineered to re-attach to themselves when broken. Such findings would impact efficient biofuel production and open a new avenue in material science.

Because research into regenerative materials remains highly exploratory, Smriti credits the Discovery Hubs for providing early access to the field. “Being at the forefront of cutting-edge research is a huge deal,” she reflects. “It means I get to see what’s happening as it happens.”

Many students echoed this sentiment. Megan Rogers and Gio Donofrio, undergraduates in another Molecular Foundry cluster, investigated how high-entropy materials might be stabilized through transition metal doping. They explained how, down the road, their research might be applied to carbon capture technology, which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. Both emphasized the novelty of this field and their excitement about the societal impact of this work. They are both eager to continue pursuing this line of study.

For first-generation college students, early access to research is particularly meaningful. An undergraduate scholar from the Kavli ENSI hub described their experience as “monumental,” sharing: “I went from having discounted grad school and giving up on research, to being confident in my own abilities.” They credited the Discovery Hub’s model as particularly helpful because it has “much more choosing-power applied to the grad student. This permits an underserved student like myself to access research via a 1-1 connection, instead of via a resume."

Interdisciplinary Exploration Beyond STEM

While mentored research is fairly common in STEM, the arts and humanities made a powerful showing. While humanities researchers typically favor oral presentations, CICI Fellow José E. Valdivia Heredia and their undergraduate mentees opted for a combination of poster and tabletop demonstration. Their project examined how Black women cultural workers use life writing to articulate experiences of disability, illness, and impairment that challenge dominant medical and social models.

José’s mentorship yielded immediate benefits for the students involved. Undergraduate Julia Miller applied the insights they gained from their case study of Minnie Evans to their own class project - an English paper about Zora Neale Hurston. “[Working with José] really broadened my horizons for my own studying and research interests,” Julia noted during the event. José’s other undergraduate, Gabriela Cruz, has drawn upon her Discovery experience to secure SURF funding(link is external) and will conduct her own independent research this summer.

The other 34 projects exhibited the same intellectual depth. Students in the NASA Space Biosciences hub presented a navigation tool that allows users to explore and analyze genomic data from spaceflight missions, modeling how spaceflight biologically impacts mice. A group from the Center for Interdisciplinary Critical Inquiry premiered a three-minute short film inspired by Yugoslav experimental cinema. A cluster investigating Italian identity across borders displayed interactive maps depicting the work of Italian-American authors.

Cultivating a Campus-Wide Ecosystem

The symposium showcased the interdisciplinary reach of the Discovery Hubs. In the 2025-26 academic year, the Discovery Hubs provided hands-on research and mentorship to 182 undergraduate scholars. These scholars spanned 56 different majors, ranging from astrophysics, math, and environmental science to economics, global studies, music, and art.

The undergraduates were supported by 30 Graduate Fellows and 22 Faculty and Staff Scientist affiliates. The Graduate Fellows represented 16 unique departments, including ethnic studies, anthropology, chemistry, bioengineering, English, and sociology. Together, the fellows and scholars represented seven unique schools and colleges across campus, including the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), the College of Engineering, the School of Education, and all five divisions of Letters & Science.

The symposium will happen again in April 2027, with projects led by the next cohort of Discovery Fellows and Scholars. Hub Fellows have been selected for the 2026-27 academic year. Applications for undergraduates will open this fall.
